It's alive! It's ALIVE! Yes my friends, the One Pen project has begun.

I'll be putting most of the sketches here

Project ONE PEN

but updates will be noted here on the blog. When this idea struck me I thought it was pretty cool but I have to say, I mis-underestimated how boring only using one pen can be.

But drawing can never actually be boring so project One Pen goes on! Until the ink from this pen runs dry! or I lose it. or it gets stolen. The second option seems most likely.

Secret Projects

My (wife) manager says I have to stop starting projects that I never finish. Especially the kind that don't pay whether they're finished or not. This is sound advice but very difficult when there's so much to do.
My two new concepts which I will start and hopefully finish posting here are:

1) ONE PEN: I started doodling with the new pen that came with our Vegas hotel room. I want to see how many sketch book pages I can fill before that pen runs out of ink.

2) ACT(or)S of Congress - I want to do caricatures of all 541 members of the 112th Congress of the USA.

So, please don't tell her what I'm up to. I'm supposed to spend all my free time working on cartoons and I do. The afore mentioned projects are things I can work on while I'm watching my toddler, like right now while he's sleeping next to me.

Classic portrait of the Scotish Haggis Beast - The world's only mammal/reptile symbiont. The reptile part of the Haggis is the ancient MacDugal Dragonis Weenis, the only surviving relative of the once mighty Scottish Dragons. The mammal part is Sheeple Sapiens, a human/sheep hybrid that came into existence several thousand years ago through what is known as "animal husbandry." It is believed that when dragons lost their ability to breath fire, they turned to sheeple for warmth and in return, promised not to eat them. A pretty fair trade except that now we eat them whenever we go to Scotland. Yum!

I've been reading lots of reviews and accounts of the event and am baffled that no one has mentioned the crustacoid creature that came all the way from Venus to sell his comics at MoCCA. Sure his minis were kinda crappy but, as someone who's attended the Fest since its inception, it's cool to see word has spread off world.

Karl was a truck driver for a major distributor of important stuff. He had stopped to take a nap in his cab at a truck stop in Delaware. When he woke up, he was in an empy warehouse in Alabama. Both arms, his left foot and beard had all been replaced with cyber parts. Karl admits the cyber stuff is pretty cool, but it has ruined his dreams of becoming a
champion arm wrestler. So now, he spends his time searching for the mysterious mad scientists that have stolen his dreams.

This charming fellow has a swiss army knife of thievery tools which extend from his right hand. He has a synthetic liver for superhuman processing of alcohol and other poisons. He also has cranial implants which allow him to communicate with others, like having a cell phone built in his head, and also enhance his hearing to filter through and pick out a conversation going on across a crowded room. He's a master spy but he's really always wanted to direct.

Lucinda's right arm and lower torso have been mechanized! To what end she's a bit shy on revealing. It's hard to be precise, but her arm looks like a short range Asten 7800 Spectral Plasma Beam weapon.

Ninety-Three-Sixteen is number 93 in a series of 200 identical cyborgs that are each only 16% organic. These machines roam urban streets picking up and recording signals from all kinds of wireless devices. This particular unit is somehow also able to pick out the ripest, freshest avocados, even when they're not in season. His handlers often send him on mundane chores, though there's nothing mundane about a great avocado.

Character - A - Day Update
There are no shortage of characters in NYC so I never worried where the next one would come from. Hipsters, hippies, drunks, druggies, demons, aliens, politicians - they're all here. Even the occasional cyborg. Occasional until recently. I've started seeing cyborgs everywhere. I took a few weeks off from my CAD blogging to research why.
The simple answer to why I'm seeing more cyborgs is, there ARE more cyborgs. DARPA and their civilian counterparts are creating all kinds of hybrid folks. Everything from a human with a single robotic limb to a robot with human organs.
Because I've found so many of them, for at least the next few weeks, this blog will look more like Cyborg-A-Day.
I hope you dig it.

Tired of wasting his time waiting, Pa Rocket, true to his name, built a rocket. Now he doesn't wait for anything. Except that damn urologist.

CAD #27: Bunny Monger

1978: Sitting in her high school biology class, stoned, Bunny had an epiphany. She would cross breed rabbits with dachshunds and make the perfect pet.

1982: Still stoned, sitting in her parents back yard with five dachshunds and 414 rabbits it finally sinks in that this cross breading won't work. Bunny gets rid of her rabbits and tries to breed dachshunds to look like rabbits.

1987: Same back yard. Bunny sells the dachshunds and buys some rabbits.

1987: Success! Breeding the rabbits to be longer is working.

1997: Bunny, almost making a living as a boutique breeder, hits the big time when her Dachshund-Kaninchen Breed becomes all the rage Germany.

2010: On the German version of Top Chef, Stephan Schmieren wins by making one of Bunny's rabbits into schnitzel with a side of spaetzle. Yum!

Wack The Wild Things

Since my son was born in September, the wife and I have had few opportunities to go to the movies. And by few I mean zero. With all the holiday blockbusters we could no longer wait to run out and see something that's supposed to be great. Baby sitter secured, we went to the local mega-plex and set our sights on Avatar. All five theaters it was playing in for the next three hours were sold out. Oh well. Up In The Air would be a not too shabby runner-up choice. Also sold out for the next three hours. Along with The Fantastic Mr. Fox and every other flick at the theater. So, we gave up on movies and went out to find a great restaurant. On our stroll we came across a small, art house theater. They were showing Where The Wild Things Are! How could I pass this up? Aside from nostalgia factor, has Spike Jonez ever made a bad movie? In we went.
Brilliant! I don't like spoilers, so I'd read almost nothing about it and was surprised by the darkness, the angst and anger the film contains. The one thing that stuck out like a sore paw was James Gandolfini. He was great. His voice fit the character to a tee. The problem is he was playing Tony Soprano. The exact same sociopathic personality in furry, Wild Thing form. Rather than losing myself in that incredibly created fantasy world, it's the one thing that brought me out of the film. It knocked down the fourth wall as I waited for Tony to have Max wacked. I hope it's not a spoiler to tell you that that didn't happen.

Retired roller derby legend Abigail Forehead now spends her days rocking and rolling along the highways and byways of North America singing songs about the swampland and also about her days in the roller derby. Mostly the latter. As she belts out her tunes, Abigail Forehead's crisp, smokey, alto voice is often drowned out by the surrounding traffic. For this we are grateful.

You can tell by the way he uses his walk, he's a woman's man. If you talk to him, he'll tell you all about it. Especially if you're a woman. His strut is a smooth, subtly choreographed motion that was patented by his grandfather, Swinger Ace. Strutter's contribution to future generations is the addition of a super sharp goatee which he swears makes him more aerodynamic. It makes the strut a fluid, living force which attracts women like nobody's business. Ask him if it's true and Strutter will tell you, "It's none of your business."

I don't care much for holidays, religious or otherwise but tonight is New Years Eve Eve! That is right, ladies and gentlemen. Tonight, the Fat Chance Fairy flies all over New York City. She has a flimsy, black, plastic bodega bag full of Good Luck and she decides who will win the lottery in the coming year. It doesn't matter if you're naughty or nice. It doesn't matter if you believe in her or not. Nothing matters. But, just in case it is possible to get on her good side, like most people, I leave a large pepperoni pie from Original Rays Pizza and a 2 liter of Dr. Pepper next to the bathroom window. It's believed that this is where she enters the apartments of those lucky enough to be getting lucky next year.

Okay, my first slip in doing a Character-A-Day on my blog. You may even notice it's been three days and I'll tell you why. I had gone out to get flowers for my wife, just because, when I was accosted by some Hassidic Ruffians. They pulled me into a dark alley and forced me to play dreidle. As luck would have it, I started out doing great. I had them by the gelt. Then, things started spinning out of control. Before I knew it I'd run out of cash and was throwing everything but the baby into the pot. Everything including my laptop with all my characters.
So, the blog was out of commission but, I'm back with a character who needs no explanation, which is good, because she has nothing to do with the above story.

You've heard of the mysterious, hairy giant that lives in the woods, or his shaggy white cousin in the Himalayas but few know about Green Foot. This pygmy offshoot of the Big Foot ( Pedes Giganticus) family is the tiniest and most powerful of all the Big Feet. Unlike their antisocial cousins, they move freely through the human world. They, in fact, have come to depend on us to transport them and cary them too and fro. The Green Foot uses his long, green tale to mesmerize people. We don't even know we're holding them. That coffee you drank and tossed away on the way to work this morning? Probably a Green Foot. That magazine you picked up to read on the subway and then lost it? Probably a Green Foot. The hooker you got a room with last weekend? Probably a hooker.

You know that guy who's always out on the street or the subway, headphones blasting, talking loudly to himself? That guy who seems to have no where to go and nothing to do? Burt Halliburton is that guy. Well, he's one of those guys. No. He looks like one of those guys but Burt believes he does have somewhere to go. He does have something to do. He dreams of someday working for Halliburton, the company that shares his name. Like one of the guys who drive the lions that make up Voltron, he wants to be part of something bigger than himself. He wants to be a cog in the mighty corporate backbone of America. What's that blasting from Burt's headphones? Is that the inspiring voice of Zig Ziglar? What's Burt saying to himself? Are those mantras of personal well being and self enhancement? Yes, yes and yes. Has Halliburton, the company, responded to any of the eighty-three resumes Burt has sent them? Not yet.

I'm going to try and post a Character A Day. Every day. Don't know how long I'll keep it up. The way I've been going with projects, I hope this makes it to #2.

I was hanging out at a dive bar in Manhattan late last night (you know, a wretched hive of scum and villainy) when a girl came up to me. She said her name was Lucia Skytalker and asked if I knew a smuggler named Don Solo. I noticed the light saber on her belt and thought she was kidding. I laughed and said, "Your Jedi mind tricks won't work on me."
Next thing I knew it was 4:30 in the afternoon and I was on a bus in The Bronx.

You probably can't tell, but there are a lot of orthodox Jews in my neighborhood. I tried to be orthodox but I couldn't give up pork fried rice or McRibb Sandwiches.

This girl was sketching on the subway, in the exact same kinda sketchbook I use to sketch people on the subway. So, I sketched her.

This Mack Daddy just strolled up to a lady in Bryant park, sat next to and started talking to her. She was nice enough to him, but she had a fiance and after a few minutes excused herself to go and catch a train.

I was drinking green beer with my friends at a bar.
A wee man appeared with no nose and strange scars.

"I'll wager ye oversized gents never seen
a tiny man what can turn hisself green!"

Drunkenly accepting that wager we coughed up some dough.
Then the little imp turned himself green don't you know?

He grabbed our money, waved goodbye and moved toward the door.
That waving hand popped off his wrist and fell to the floor!
"I reckon I won't do that trick anymore."

We're having a baby! My wife is about 15 weeks knocked up which means we're one month from being able to know what sex he is. I'm thrilled to be having a kid. No matter what he turns out to be, boy or girl or boy. Lauren doesn't want to know but I think we should find out. I love suspense in a novel or a movie or presidential election but not in this case. I want to find out so we can choose his name, decorate his room and start buying tonka trucks.
Lauren just suggested that until we know what we're having we combine She, He & It so people can ask her how the little Shit is doing.

Half Demon Dolls vs. Devil Doll?

Holy crap. I haven't posted in 4 months. But enough about me. Have you ever been to a concert and walked out thinking, "They should have paid me to have to sit through that."
Today, I got paid to sit through that. And it was fun. I was caricaturizing the patrons at Hard Rock Cafe for a TeenVogue event. I didn't know there'd be a battle of the bands, but battle three bands did. And the winner...

Half Demon Doll, presented with a record contract by Little Steven. Not too shabby. Now, the big question is, do these 4 teeny bopper girls from Minnesota know their bands name is similar to Jenny "Devil Doll" Gonzalez ?
